Ferries from Nordstrand

Table of Contents

Nordstrand is the southern gateway into the North Frisian Wadden Sea. Connected to the mainland by a causeway, you drive right to the jetty - and from here the region's only year-round car ferry outside Dagebüll casts off.

To Pellworm: the year-round route

Thirty-five minutes aboard the MS Pellworm I of the Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrt, from the Strucklahnungshörn jetty. In high season up to six departures per direction stand in the schedule, in the winter half-year three to five - and on every day of the year. Vehicles come along; register in advance.

To Hallig Hooge

Sixty-two to seventy minutes with the MS Adler-Express, two departures per operating day, from late March to early November. It is the main connection of the summer network out of Nordstrand.

To Amrum and Hörnum

To Amrum it is about an hour and a half, to Hörnum on Sylt two and a half. Both routes are sailed by the same MS Adler-Express on its Wadden Sea line, again in the summer half-year only.

To Heligoland and Föhr: with a change

Adler-Schiffe sells through-tickets from Nordstrand to Heligoland (a good three hours) and to Föhr (about two and a half hours). Both involve a change of vessel; the Heligoland sailing stands in the 2026 schedule to 21 October.

What the winter leaves

Between early November and late March the Pellworm ferry remains in the timetable from Nordstrand, and nothing else. If you are heading for Föhr or Amrum in that period, plan via Dagebüll; for a hallig, via Schlüttsiel.

Which destinations can I reach from Nordstrand? +

Year-round Pellworm in 35 minutes. In the summer half-year also Hooge in a good hour, Amrum in about an hour and a half, Hörnum on Sylt in two and a half hours and Heligoland in a good three. Sailings to Föhr involve a change of vessel.

Is there a car ferry from Nordstrand? +

Yes, to Pellworm. The MS Pellworm I of the Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrt carries vehicles, bicycles and freight; register the outward and return crossing with a vehicle in advance. The Adler lines, by contrast, are excursion services for day visitors.

Is Nordstrand an island? +

Nordstrand is connected to the mainland by a causeway and can therefore be reached by car. For ferry planning Nordstrand counts as a departure port, not a destination - like Dagebüll and Schlüttsiel.

How do I get to Nordstrand? +

By car across the causeway from the North Frisian mainland coast - no ferry needed for that. The Pellworm ferry leaves from the Strucklahnungshörn jetty on the western edge of the peninsula; the operator can advise on parking.
